The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease in partnership with Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health, invites applications for an academic Infectious Diseases physician to be based at the University of Alberta Hospital.  The successful applicant will have a major research focus, dedicating at least 50% of their time to research, in an area that aligns with the existing strengths of the University, Faculty, Department and Division. The successful candidate will have to have demonstrated a successful track record in research, or incredible promise. 

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.  The University is currently home to 39,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff.  The Division of Infectious Diseases currently has 27 Faculty members. It provides clinical services to all acute care facilities in Edmonton, and consultative services to Northern Alberta and western NWT. There are established specialty programs in HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT), Transplant Infectious Diseases, Infection Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship as well as close relationship with Provincial and regional microbiology laboratories, and regional Public Health officials. The Division boasts one of the longest running and most highly regarded Canadian postgraduate training programs in Infectious Diseases, and has a unique fellowship program in Transplant Infectious Diseases. It has a long history of conducting clinical trials of antiviral therapy, and members of the Division are actively engaged in clinical, translational and basic science research.

The successful candidate will be an MD with certification in Infectious Diseases by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent), and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Key accountabilities will include, but will not be limited to: clinical practice of inpatient and ambulatory care in Adult Infectious Diseases, classroom and bedside teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees, including Infectious Diseases subspecialty residents, and the development of an internationally recognized research program. Clinical practice is expected of the successful candidate and may include, but not be limited to, inpatient consultation and participation in Zone wide after hours call; ambulatory care including OPAT (optional), longitudinal care of persons living with HIV/AIDS (optional), management of patients with chronic viral hepatitis (optional). Other areas of clinical interest may be incorporated into the role. 

The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured or tenure-track appointment in the Department of Medicine, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.  Academic rank will commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Alternative Relationship Plan (A-ARP). Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
