The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology in partnership with Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health, invites applications for a Director of Heart Rhythm Services for the Alberta Health Services-Edmonton Zone and the Division of Cardiology. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to 39,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff.
The University of Alberta's Division of Cardiology is an integral part of the Department of Medicine and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, a state of the art facility that provides tertiary and quaternary cardiac care services for the City of Edmonton, Northern Alberta, and parts of British Columbia, Yukon, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and portions of Saskatchewan. It has one of the largest heart transplant program in Canada and is the only heart institute in the country providing care for both pediatric and adult patients. Two pediatric Electrophysiologists are also part of the institute and interact with the adult group and a large Adult Congenital Heart Disease program. Three state of the art EP labs make the Institute one of the best-equipped facilities in North America. Other defining features include a large imaging research center (ABACUS) which is available for clinical and basic science research.
The Director, Heart Rhythm Services will join a group of 30 cardiologists including six other Electrophysiologists. As the Director, Heart Rhythm Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for organizing and rationalizing electrophysiology services in innovative ways in the Edmonton Zone, Northern Alberta, and Western Canada. Additionally, the successful candidate will act as the Edmonton Zone Heart Rhythm Services lead and collaborate with colleagues from the University of Calgary with respect to provincial initiatives. This individual must have a strong research background in electrophysiology either basic science or clinical and will be expected to develop and support a provincial wide academic arrhythmia program. In keeping with our vision statement of exemplary patient care, discovery and education; the successful candidate will have the opportunity to grow and develop the Edmonton Zone Heart Rhythm services to become one of the most respected and successful programs.
The Director will be appointed to the Department of Medicine in a tenure-track position at the Associate or Full-Professor level, commensurate with experience. A competitive level of remuneration is offered through the Department of Medicine Academic Alternative Relationship Plan (A-ARP). This includes a University rank-based salary with a comprehensive benefits and pension plan, as well as professional remuneration. The A-ARP allows faculty members to devote significant portions of their time to research. Startup funding for research will be made available to the successful candidate, commensurate with their research program. Some clinical activity is expected for maintaining competency in the field.
Candidates must have an MD or equivalent, be eligible for certification in General Internal Medicine and a subspecialty in Cardiology with the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Research experience in electrophysiology is also required. Preference will be given to those who have proven success in securing peer-reviewed operating grants, a superior publication record, and demonstrated ability for leadership, collaborative work and mentorship of trainees.
