University of Alberta

Academic Neurologist in Epilepsy

MED Medicine Department

Competition No.  -    A100631566
Closing Date  -    Will remain open until filled.

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for an Academic Neurologist in Epilepsy to be based at the University of Alberta Hospital.  Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.  The University is currently home to 39,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff.

The Division of Neurology and the Edmonton zone have identified a significant physician resource shortfall in EEG interpretation, particularly in off hours and in the zone ICUs. Expertise in Epilepsy is an ongoing need for the Division of Neurology given the prevalence of epilepsy as being among the highest in neurological practice, the large zone bed occupancy of seizure patients and the existence at UAH of an Epilepsy surgery program. Most leaders in the field now agree that less than 50% of eligible epilepsy surgery candidates are considered for intervention despite the high quality evidence of efficacy. With an academic interest (requesting 30% research commitment) would blend very well with the goals of the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute and the ongoing academic productivity of the Division of Neurology in scholarly academic activity addressing seizures and epilepsy.

The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with additional graduate level or postdoctoral level training in epilepsy and epilepsy research to prepare for a career in the epilepsy field and an FRCPC with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)

The successful candidate will provide clinical care for Epilepsy patients, and will participate in other clinical and academic activities of the Neurology division. The individual will also be expected to promote research, teaching and quality improvement initiatives related to Epilepsy.

Key accountabilities of the Epilepsy neurologist will include, but will not be limited to direct inpatient and outpatient care, teaching of residents, medical students and other undergraduates, a close relationship to the Neurosciences and Mental Health Institute and participation in Divisional, Departmental and University activities.

The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured or tenure-track appointment in the Department of Medicine, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Alternative Relationship Plan (A-ARP). Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Interested candidates are asked to submit online a letter of intent and curriculum vitae outlining their education, qualifications, experience, research interests, etc.) along with three letters of reference.
