The Nursing Simulation Centre (NSC) is 398 square meters (4,288 square feet) of state-of-the-art space where Faculty of Nursing undergraduate and graduate students engage in immersive learning using a variety of simulated teaching-learning strategies including:  standardized patients; low-, medium- and high-fidelity simulators; and an extensive collection of training models.  In addition, the NSC employs a group of standardized patients - individuals who play the role of patients - to provide learners with opportunities to develop and practice communication and health assessment skills and to provide care to persons experiencing mental health problems.

The position supports the evolution of a state of the art simulation teaching and learning environment, in alignment with strategic priorities of the Faculty of Nursing and the University of Alberta. This position develops and provides instruction that incorporates current teaching methodologies, technologies, and other trends that reflect advances in specific areas of the discipline associated with evidence-based instruction in nursing lab activities from foundations of skill development through simulation techniques.

The successful candidate will provide leadership and oversight of operational resources for all education and research activities within the NSC. This requires expert understanding of the program operations, multiple and sometimes competing needs of students and faculty relative to management of schedules, human resources, budgetary impacts, operational and curricular models.


Nursing Simulation Centre Leadership

  • Collaborates with lab staff to ensure that adequate needs, gaps, staffing and logistics are identified and addressed to ensure optimum student experiences
  • Collaborates with lab staff to ensure all supplies, equipment, media, computers and materials required to replicate simulated health care experiences are available and all equipment and simulation technology are at optimum operating levels
  • Communicates and enforces with students, staff, and faculty the policies, procedures, and processes to ensure activities align with course objectives, standardization of instruction across the program, and are in compliance with regulatory, accrediting, and industry standards of best practice
  • Coordinates the acquisition and upgrading of NSC supplies/equipment and projects future resources needs
  • Compiles data and submits annual reports for the NSC to the Faculty of Nursing Leadership Team

Teaching & Learning

  • Provides expert instruction in nursing skills development to ensure alignment with course objectives, standardization of instruction across the program, and compliance with regulatory, accrediting, and industry standards of best practice
  • Provides expert instruction in simulation activities including facilitation, contributing to workflow processes, planning and leveling learning, review and revision of course materials to ensure alignment with course objectives, standardization of instruction across the program, and compliance with regulatory, accrediting, and industry standards of best practice
  • Collaborates with faculty and curriculum development teams to provide operational support for the design, implementation and evaluation of learning strategies used in clinical simulation for all nursing programs
  • Responsible for faculty development and evaluation of faculty competency in lab skills and simulation activities
  • Contributes to course development to ensure the essentials of course objectives, remediation, and student success are aligned with expectations and outcomes


  • Master's degree (MSN) required, PhD preferred
  • Current registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta is required
  • Certification as Healthcare Simulation Educator preferred
  • 3-5 years relevant teaching experience or work experience in simulation techniques and nursing skills instruction preferred
  • Background/expertise in instructional and pedagogical concepts and methods in health care skills and simulation instruction
  • Demonstrated administrative and leadership abilities
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Google Applications and eClass (Moodle)
  • Knowledge of Laerdal, Meti and Gummard Human Patient Simulator software
  • Previous experience as simulation Operator strongly preferred
  • Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical, interpretive and problem solving skills
  • Collaborative team player with ability liaise and coordinate multiple teams
  • Work both independently and collaboratively with faculty and interdisciplinary groups
  • Able to guide, motivate and lead others and build strong positive working relationships
  • Able to provide feedback to others
