Reporting directly to the Dean, the Assistant Dean (Administration) is accountable for establishing and directing all administrative functions that support the Faculty’s research and teaching programs.  Major areas of responsibility include planning, managing, and supervising all aspects of the following administrative areas:  finance, human resources, information technology, strategic planning, clerical support services, space and facilities, and special projects.  This position also supervises the administrative staff in the following areas:  graduate programs, undergraduate programs, teaching and learning office, communications and events, quality assurance, nursing research office and global nursing office.  In addition, the Assistant Dean (Administration) serves as a key advisor to the Dean and Vice Dean, and is a liaison with the Office of the Provost.  The Assistant Dean sits on all Faculty executive management committees, and represents the Faculty and/or the Dean and Vice Dean on selected University-wide committees.

The Faculty of Nursing is non-departmentalized; the Assistant Dean (Administration) responsibilities are Faculty-wide.  The Assistant Dean (Administration) manages the Faculty’s base operating budget of $19,966 million.

This position must accommodate the needs of an academic clientele that currently comprises 40 full tenure-track faculty positions, 47 Faculty Lecturers and 64 sessional faculty.  During a period of significant expansion, the  Faculty’s student clientele consists of approximately 1,321 undergraduate students enrolled in 4 programs, and 114 active graduate students in Master’s and Doctoral programs.

Key Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Advises the Dean, Vice Dean and Faculty executive on strategic planning, operational planning and management, and financial stewardship
  • Oversees the design and operation of the Faculty’s financial management systems to ensure optimal deployment of financial resources
  • Oversees the creation and implementation of human resource /practices that are consistent with attracting and retaining outstanding faculty and staff
  • Directs the deployment of the Faculty’s information technology (IT) resources to efficiently and cost-effectively meet teaching, research, and administrative requirements
  • Provides oversight to the Teaching and Learning Office
  • Guides the provision of administrative services to Faculty members
  • Ensures that both the Faculty’s long-term and short-term space requirements are adequately addressed
  • Manages special projects and issues
  • Provides oversight to support staff in the Undergraduate Office, Graduate Office, Research Office, Simulation Lab, Global Nursing Office, and Quality Assurance unit, jointly with the appropriate Associate Dean/Director
  • Provides oversight to the communications and events team
  • Liaises with Edmonton Clinic Health Academy (ECHA) personnel


Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will have a related University degree and/or continuing professional education
  • 5-7 years of work experience with progressive academic management responsibility; relevant work experience at the University of Alberta strongly preferred
  • Powerful analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Superb administrative and organizational skills; keen attention to detail
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Extensive experience across a broad portfolio encompassing business planning, financial management, human resources and technology
  • Demonstrated ability at developing and leading teams
  • Ability to work effectively as a member; high-level interpersonal skills
  • High degree of organizational awareness and business acumen
  • Project management skills and experience
