Overview

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and the provincial Alberta Health Services (AHS) invites applications for the tenure-track Chair of the University of Alberta Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine.

A concurrent leadership role as the Alberta Health Services Edmonton Zone Clinical Department Head (ZCDH) Anesthesiology, may be possible depending on the strengths and interests of the successful candidate.

Chair of the Department Of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, University Of Alberta - Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a physician and have an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent in a relevant discipline with national or international reputation as a scholar and will have proven leadership experience, which will be applied to strengthen the University’s reputation as a leading research-intensive post-secondary institution in Canada and abroad. The Chair must have a demonstrated ability to foster mentorship and career development opportunities for faculty members. Strong and well-developed interpersonal communication skills are an asset.

The individual must be eligible for licensure in the province of Alberta and will hold certification in Anesthesiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or an equivalent) and be eligible for licensure as a specialist in anesthesiology in the Province of Alberta.

The Chair’s responsibilities include:

  • Developing  and executing a strategic plan for continued departmental growth in the delivery of superior educational programs, research innovation and clinical service
  • Working to propagate interdisciplinary research and clinical care
  • Promoting  administrative, clinical, research and educational excellence
  • Fostering a culture of mentoring among faculty within the department
  • Increasing visibility of the department within the Faculty and the University, nationally and internationally
  • Supporting the growth and continued accreditation of the department’s educational and clinical programs  

The Chair will be responsible for a department with 9 full-time academic faculty and over 150 part time clinical faculty within 13 specialty divisions.  The successful candidate, together with the Office of the Dean, will be responsible for the education of undergraduate (170 students/year) and postgraduate training programs (over 30 residents in a fully-accredited Royal College training program). 

The successful candidate, together with the Office of the Dean, will be responsible for the graduate program that offers graduate degrees through the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta. The Department has research strengths are in the areas of: Mechanisms of myocardial protection; Stem cells and Anesthetics; Genetics, Transcriptomic, Proteomics, and Metabolomics; Neurobiology of pain; Cardiovascular pharmacology; Innovative methods of acute and chronic pain management and population-based outcome studies.

The Edmonton Zone Clinical Department Head for Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Alberta Health Services - Qualifications

The Edmonton Zone Clinical Department Head (ZCDH) for Anesthesiology is a major role with AHS that is integrated with the University of Alberta. The position is governed by the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and reports to the Associate Zone Medical Director (AZMD) and Senior Operating Officer (SOO) responsible for Anesthesiology in the Edmonton Zone. This is a key medical leadership position that works closely with the Executive Director (ED) responsible for Anesthesiology using the AHS dyad model and will be jointly responsible for providing integrated leadership for Anesthesiology across the Edmonton Zone. Quality improvement is a strategic pillar of Alberta Health Services. Other major responsibilities of the position include:

  • Operational Leadership – effective oversight of all Edmonton Zone Anesthesiology services, activities and programs. 
  • Strategic Planning and Evaluation – development of Zone plans, in-patient services, priorities and performance agreements, including workforce planning
  • Relationship Management – collaboration with partners and stakeholders including the Stollery Children’s Hospital, Covenant Health, the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, the Cross Cancer Institute and the University of Alberta
  • Performance Management – innovation and integration of high quality patient-focused clinical care
  • Other responsibilities as outlined in section 2.7.2 of the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws (http://insite.albertahealthservices.ca/6229.asp)

The ZCDH will be responsible for providing leadership to the various, diverse aspects of Anesthesiology across the Edmonton Zone, paying special attention to zone wide Anesthesiology services. The ZCDH will also play a lead role in fostering a culture of the highest quality effective and efficient clinical care, research mentorship and will be a strong advocate for excellence in anesthesiology education.

The opportunities in research are enhanced by support from Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions, the Institute of Health Economics and the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry’s seven research institutes.
