The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) at the University of Alberta is inviting applications from current full-time faculty for the position of Assistant Dean, Clinical Research Platforms.

The Assistant Dean reports to the Associate Dean, Clinical Research and will be expected to work collaboratively with other Associate and Assistant Deans to advance the mission of the faculty. High quality clinical research requires access to highly qualified personnel and methodological expertise. Domains of support may include biostatistics, study design, clinical trial management, and data services among others. The coordination of new and existing clinical research platforms in FoMD will maximize progress in clinical research by optimizing the use of local and provincial support platforms, including those supported by the Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR). In addition, coordination will avoid duplication of new resources ensuring maximum value from research reinvestments.

Portfolio responsibilities include:

  • Create and maintain an inventory of local and provincial clinical research support platforms and methodological expertise
  • Develop a strategic vision of existing clinical research strengths and future directions, including a strategic plan of development and investment in specific areas (e.g., Big Data expertise, precision medicine)
  • Explore and foster innovative and transdisciplinary collaborations that support clinical research (e.g., machine learning, faculty of business, biomedical engineering) 
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in the development of integrated operational plans and sustainability of local support platforms
  • Develop platforms to support and enhance clinical and health outcomes research
  • Develop a sustainable platform for engaging in scientifically rigorous quality improvement work
  • Develop and maintain a strategy to increase and encourage patient engagement in clinical research 

The ideal candidate will have an MD, MD/PhD  as well as experience in clinical or health outcomes research in a university setting or other research agencies with a strong working knowledge of academic/health system research administration policies and issues .

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; this position is 0.3 FTE for a three-year term, renewable upon satisfactory review and mutual agreement.
