The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) at the University of Alberta is inviting applications from current full-time faculty for the position as Chair of the Department of Pharmacology.

The Department ( is at the forefront of pharmacological teaching and research and has strengths in, neuropharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, molecular pharmacology,  diabetes and endocrine pharmacology.  Research activities within the Department of Pharmacology are well funded by provincial, national and international agencies, allowing the Department to maintain a very strong research profile.  The 13 academic staff members of the Department of Pharmacology are associated with the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute, the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta,  the Alberta Diabetes Institute, the Cardiovascular Research Institute and the Women’s & Children’s Health Research Institute.  The Department is one of very few in North America to offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in pharmacology.

Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty, the Department Chair is charged with providing the management and leadership necessary to enable successful academic endeavours in the areas of teaching, research and service.  The successful candidate will have a PhD Or MD/PhD and be an internationally-recognized basic or clinical scientist who will provide dynamic and innovative leadership, complement the excellent ongoing research and teaching endeavours within the Department and maintain a strong independently-funded research program.

Applications should be submitted in confidence and electronically (using PDF files for attachments).  The application should consist of a letter of introduction, a curriculum vitae, a three-page statement commenting on current and future research interests and an outline of the applicant’s teaching experience and philosophy.  Applicants should also include the names of three references (who will not be contacted without the applicant’s consent).  Applicants should discuss their leadership experience and their thoughts on how to meet the challenges of academic leadership in their letter of introduction.  The consideration of applications for this position will begin January 3, 2018.  However, the competition will remain open until the position is filled.
