Alberta Health Services, in partnership with the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, are inviting applications from Anesthesiologists with advanced Cardiac training to join the Department of Anesthesiology in the Edmonton Zone.

A team of more than 160 department members, the Edmonton Zone Department of Anesthesiology is composed of physicians, anesthesiologists, scientists, educators and allied health professionals who provide services to ten Edmonton hospitals, and referrals from northern and western Alberta.

The position will be based out of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, a state of the art facility that provides secondary and tertiary cardiac care services for the City of Edmonton, Northern Alberta, and parts of British Columbia, Yukon, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and portions of Saskatchewan. It has the largest heart transplant program in Canada and is the only heart institute in the country providing care for both pediatric and adult patients. Three state of the art EP labs opened in 2009 making the Institute one of the best-equipped facilities in North America. Other defining features include a fourth dedicated research biplane laboratory with a stereotaxic guidance system - one of two in Canada and a large imaging research center (ABACUS).

The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute is affiliated with the University of Alberta, and serves as an important training hospital for residents and students.  Therefore, the successful candidates will be encouraged to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, University of Alberta. This will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, which has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions and is located in Edmonton.

The successful applicant shall have certification in Anesthesiology with the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Advanced training in Cardiac Anesthesiology is required. Individuals interested in education of trainees and students are encouraged to apply.  Remuneration will be based on a fee-for service model with billing directly to Alberta Health.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

The University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services are committed to an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workforce. We welcome applications from all qualified persons. We encourage women; First Nations, Métis and Inuit persons; members of visible minority groups; persons with disabilities; persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expression; and all those who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas and the University to apply.
