The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, in partnership with Alberta Health Services (AHS) in Edmonton, Alberta is inviting applications for a zone wide Staff Anesthesiologist position based 0.5 FTE at the University of Alberta Hospital and 0.5 FTE at the Sturgeon Community Hospital.

A team of more than 160 department members, the Department of Anesthesiology is composed of physicians, anesthetists, scientists, educators and allied health professionals who provide services to ten Edmonton hospitals, and referrals from northern and western Alberta. We are a major referral centre for Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories with a referral base of over 1.5 million people. The Anesthesiology group provides services to patients at the Cross Cancer Institute, Grey Nuns Community Hospital, Leduc Community Hospital, Misericordia Community Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Stollery Children’s Hospital, Sturgeon Community Hospital and the University of Alberta Hospital.

The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada's leading clinical, research and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually from across western and northern Canada. The hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, including specialized services within cardiac sciences, neurosciences, surgery, medicine, renal, critical care, emergency and trauma care, and a state-of-the-art burn unit. The site's Organ and Tissue Transplant Program is also recognized as a national leader in both success rates and transplant volumes.

Located just north of Edmonton, the Sturgeon Community Hospital provides a wide variety of health services to the community of St. Albert and surrounding area. As a community hospital, the Sturgeon’s focus is on providing the best care in a comfortable, modern and friendly setting. Care provided includes emergency, women’s health, cardiac care, surgery, medicine, pediatrics, and rehabilitation.

The successful applicant shall have certification in Anesthesiology with the Royal College of Physicians of Canada or equivalent and be eligible for licensure as a specialist in Anesthesiology with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Additional training in regional, acute pain, liver transplant, vascular, obstetrical and cardiac will be considered an asset.  Remuneration will be based on a fee-for service model with billing directly to Alberta Health.

The successful applicants will be expected to apply for an Academic Colleague Appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine and be willing to be involved in resident teaching and clinical research facilitation.
