The Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services (iSMSS) at the University of Alberta leads ground-breaking research that informs policy development, intervention, education and community outreach for sexual and gender minorities, locally, nationally and globally.

Reporting to the Dean of Education, the Executive Director for iSMSS is responsible for collaboratively advancing the mission of iSMSS as a scholarly interdisciplinary 'hub' for ground-breaking research and advocacy on sexual and gender minority identities, issues, and concerns in education and broader society. The Executive Director collaboratively develops and leads the implementation of key strategies to achieve the mission of iSMSS goals, by applying strategic oversight and leadership, effective resource and program management, expanding and enhancing research and research relationships amongst research associates and key stakeholders, building relationships with internal and external stakeholders and partners, while ensuring a positive, productive environment of open communication and continuous learning.

Responsibilities include:


  • Supports the expansion of research being conducted by the Institute and is the liaison between researchers, Institute members, stakeholders and program participants
  • Oversees all of iSMSS activities, research and special events
  • Advances the strategic goals and research profile of iSMSS through active participation in multi-stakeholder processes, external boards and committees related to the on-going work of iSMSS
  • Ensures programming and advocacy are based on strong research, increasing synergy among research, policy, programs, and service.

Strategic Leadership and Program Planning

  • Sets the strategic direction for the Institute in collaboration with the Dean, the Senior Leadership team, the ad hoc advisory committee and the Executive Committee, implementing and operationalizing the Institute's strategic vision and direction
  • Accountable to manage the brand alignment of iSMSS internally and externally, and cultivates employees to be brand stewards
  • With the assistance of the Program Manager, develops, implements, and maintains a viable multi-year strategic business plan for iSMSS
  • Management of contractual relationships associated with iSMSS research and advocacy commitments.

Financial Management

  • Responsible for the financial stewardship and adherence to accurate financial reporting as required by donor, funder, government or entity
  • Accountable for the Institute's operating budget and expenditures
  • Provides the Dean's Advisory Committee on iSMSS, and key funding partners with current, timely and accurate financial reports and forecasts 
  • Supports the fundraising activities of iSMSS by meeting with potential donors, contributing to the development of funding requests, and stewarding donations.

Human Resources and Administration

  • Working closely with the iSMSS manager, oversees human resources for the Institute
  • Acts as a mentor, coach and support for all iSMSS staff
  • Oversees the planning and production of project and annual reports, and policy review.

Relationship Management & Communication

  • Ensures communication in the organization, and with key stakeholders is continuous and effective through various media tools
  • Accountable to build effective communication channels and trust relationships with Academic Units, as well as members of other administrative support units
  • Promotes and maintains partnerships with government agencies and industry to improve and/or leverage delivery of service
  • Acts as the spokesperson on behalf of the Institute to the public, partners, media and the community.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a university degree in Business, Arts or Education. While a graduate degree is not required, it is preferred.
  • Have 5 to 10 years of experience in senior management in an entrepreneurial, public sector environment.
  • Have extensive research, policy or program management and development experience
  • Have fundraising experience.
  • Have outstanding written, verbal presentation, group facilitation, and active listening skills.
  • Have strong conflict resolution skills, including the ability to build consensus.

In accordance with the Temporary and Administrative Staff agreement, this position has a term length of two years, with the possibility of renewal, offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and an annual salary range of $65,906 to $109,772.  Salary commensurate with education and experience.
