The particle astrophysics group at the University of Alberta is seeking an outstanding candidate to join our activities on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The University of Alberta IceCube group has a leading role in analysis of IceCube data with a focus on both low-energy neutrino physics and high-energy astrophysical neutrino searches. The Research Associate will be responsible for a global analysis of high-energy astrophysical neutrino data spanning multiple data sets. The incumbent will play a significant role in the analysis design, detector simulation and software development necessary to bring this analysis to a conclusion.

Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Planning research activities and providing research/analysis design for the IceCube project, specifically for the global data analysis with focus on astrophysical neutrino searches
  • Designing the analysis and collecting the necessary data
  • Publishing research papers in prominent journals and conferences, specifically on the results of the global data analysis
  • Presenting research results in laboratory meetings, seminars, scientific conferences, IceCube collaboration meetings and/or related settings
  • Effectively communicating with team members
  • Guiding and coaching a small number of undergraduate and graduate students

The successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD in particle physics
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a postdoctoral researcher on IceCube
  • Experience overseeing undergraduate and graduate students
  • Experience with neutrino cross-section calculations
  • Experience developing and running low-level and high-level particle detector simulations
  • Statistical data analysis methods
  • Low-level data analysis framework programming
  • Several years of experience with C++, Python and Boost

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff agreement, this position has an appointment of 24 months, and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at and annual salary range of $58,210 to $65,490.
