The Research Associate plays a key role within the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science on bioactive peptide research. The purpose of this position is to explore the health benefits of food protein-derived bioactive peptides and their functional mechanisms in cells and in vivo. The incumbent will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and other stakeholders to demonstrate the potential uses of bioactive peptides as natural health products and functional foods.

Duties: 

  • Designs and performs high level, complex research activities
  • Prepares research proposals for external funding under the direction of the PI
  • Carries out data analysis and prepares research project reports 
  • Reviews and writes peer reviewed scientific papers, presentations and other communication/promotional material (including for industry conferences and workshops) 
  • Provides guidance and training in research methods and scientific writing for students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists
  • Maintains laboratory experiments; helps to foster a safe working environment
  • Performs other related administrative duties as required 

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Nutritional Biochemistry, Nutrition and Physiology or Food Science
  • Minimum 4 years of Postdoctoral Fellowship experience or equivalent in the field of functional foods and bioactive peptides  
  • In depth knowledge and research experience on biochemistry, molecular biology, protien chemistry etc that can be applied for molecular mechanisms - study of food bioactives and functional foods using cell culture and animal methods are required
  • Strong publication record in internationally recognized journals
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals with different experience and technical backgrounds; ability to work as part of a team

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position has a term length of 2 years and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at www.hrs.ualberta.ca annual salary range $58,210 - $65,490;  commensurate with experience and qualifications.
