Reporting to the Director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology (LKSIoV), the Operations and Research Manager will help the Institute thrive, through both administration and research. The incumbent will be required to tackle complex regulatory and governance issues and aid the Director of the LKSIoV in managing the operation at a very high level.  The position is responsible for attending to the organization, planning and management of the Institute. Communication with key stakeholders both within the University and with both provincial and federal governments and agencies is crucial, as is the development and carry-through of an effective communications plan for the Institute.  The Operations and Research Manager is responsible for managing the multiple initiatives within the LKSIoV including facilitating coordination, prioritization, communication, progress monitoring, and evaluation of these initiatives. The individual will have an opportunity for time to conduct research.

Responsibilities include:

Research

  • Designs experiments, data collection protocols, and standards
  • Conducts advanced analysis of research results
  • Oversees and/or conducts data collection activities and determines next steps for research direction
  • Utilizes in depth scientific knowledge to assist with grant writing to pursue internal and external funding
  • Writes major components of the first draft of grant in a clear, concise and compelling manner including drafting a budget, initial content, packaging, and submitting the final document
  • Prepares high-level scientific reports, abstracts, and manuscripts
  • Presents research results in laboratory meetings; presents research findings at national or international meetings to enhance an independent research profile
  • Develops and maintains scientific collaborations, locally and internationally
  • Assists with supervision, training, and mentoring of undergraduate, graduate, and post-doc trainees within LKSIoV lab

Management

  • Integrates, tracks, and advances LKSIoV activities and provides regular progress reports to the Director on research, fund development, and initiatives progress
  • Works closely and cooperatively with the Operations Manager of the Applied Virology Institute (AVI)
  • Attend and provide scientific input to meetings with the Director, AVI Operations Manager and various stakeholders groups
  • Schedules regular quarterly Management Committee and biannual Oversight Committee meetings of the LKSIoV: provides input to discussion, provides updates on progress of research and/or initiatives, records minutes, and actions/delegates items from these meetings
  • Supports the Director in the development and implementation of the LKSIoV scientific communication strategy
  • Participates in knowledge translation (e.g. Publications, presentations, online content, etc.)
  • Integrates, tracks, and reports on advances in the LKSIoV including scientific and leveraging activities (external awards for research and personnel) that enhance LKSIoV
  • Develops a social media strategy and manages social media channels to increase public awareness of the LKSIoV and its activities with particular emphasis on the website
  • Develops, coordinates, and oversees public engagement activities to promote the LKSIoV to internal and external stakeholders
  • Works with the Director on reports for internal and external stakeholder and ensures communication with key stakeholders both within the University and with both provincial and federal governments and agencies
  • Liaises with the Director on fund development opportunities including working with the Fund Development personnel at the Faculty/University levels
  • In collaboration with the Director, is responsible for researching, identifying and advising on funding opportunities and the development of proposals to secure funding for the Institute
  • Makes presentations on behalf of the Director about the LKSIoV, including providing tours to potential and current donors, utilizing their in-depth knowledge to fully speak to and answer any questions related to the research being conducted as required
  • Provides financial management including the oversight and control of research project funds to ensure optimum use of financial resources, including monitoring and forecasting budgets; works closely with the Director, management committee, and/or FoMD Research Office to monitor budgets
  • Manages the Institute's existing and new funding sources and stakeholder relationships; this includes the coordination and/or writing of regular detailed and scientifically-complex progress and financial reports to funders and other stakeholders, and liaising with numerous third party collaborators, including the Faculty, UofA, Li Ka Shing, and other donors
  • Reviews and forecasts funding to determine what support the LKSIoV can provide to other researchers and how much
  • Interacts with the MMI office regarding human resources support required
  • Coordinates purchases, liaises with vendors, oversees inventory management related to office and labs, researches large equipment purchases and provides recommendations to Director 
  • Meets with the Director to receive general direction regarding new policies, conducts research on best practices, drafts policies, and provides to Director for review, e.g. drafting the policy for travel awards
  • Develops and communicates new and revised procedures for the LKSIoV
  • Advises on the application of the University’s policies and procedures, including research administration, contract management, risk management, etc.

Qualifications

  • PhD in virology or associated disciplines preferred
  • Knowledge of and training in the area of virology/immunology
  • 2-3 years of postdoctoral experience
  • 1-3 years of experience in scientific writing
  • Demonstrated ability to work at a senior administrative level
  • Previous experience in marketing and communications is a strong asset, with an emphasis on knowledge translation for the general public and for fund development


In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position has an end date of June 30, 2020 and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at: www.hrs.ualberta.ca and annual salary range of $58,2010 to $80,050.
