Under Dr. Sutton, The Research Associate will be responsible for advancing research in the broad area of statistical learning, with a focus on online learning, with applications in telecommunication or information theory. This position will carry out fundamental research on the theory and computational complexity of machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms, particularly reinforcement learning algorithms, and will also be expected to work with senior members of the Reinforcement Learning and Artificial Intelligence (RLAI) laboratory in areas of mutual interest, including new areas that the incumbent might introduce into the RLAI research program.

Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Developing and leading an independent research program in the aforementioned field of research that is well aligned and complements the ongoing research directions in the Department of Computing Science
  • Carrying out research in artificial intelligence, machine learning or cognitive science; conducting complex research on computational theories of mental phenomena
  • Publishing research papers in prominent journals and conferences
  • Presenting research results in laboratory meetings, seminars, scientific conferences and/or related settings
  • Supervising students and postdoctoral research fellows
  • Effectively communicating with team members
  • Collaborating with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) and RLAI Principal Investigators (PIs) for the purposes of research development

The successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or Statistics
  • 6 years of experience at the post-doctoral level, including 2 years in a leadership role
  • Advanced knowledge of statistics and online learning with application areas such as telecommunications or information theory
  • A demonstrated strong research record
  • Excellent interpersonal skills allowing for effective participation in supervising students and research associates
  • Experience in teaching and/or project management
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff agreement, this position has an appointment of 24 months, and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at and annual salary range of $58,210 to $80,050.
