The position offers a comprehensive benefits package which can be viewed at:  The successful candidate will work five consecutive days followed by two days off and may be required to work statutory holidays and University closure days as we operate seven days a week, twelve months of the year. 

The Laboratory Assistant, Cage Wash is responsible for cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting and sterilizing various lab animal cages and caging units used in the lab animal research facility and also for general cleaning within other areas of the facility.

Please note that this position is responsible for a variety of routine and repetitive duties and will be employed within the cage/equipment wash facility where there will be exposure to potential allergens.


  • Cleans, sanitizes, disinfects and sterilizes various lab animal cages and caging units
  • Prepares dirty and clean materials for loading and unloading from the cage washer
  • Inspects cages and other materials for cleanliness after they have been through the cage washer
  • Monitors cage wash equipment and autoclaves to ensure the appropriate temperature is reached to sterilize caging and other materials
  • Removes and bags used bedding for transportation to the disposal area and ensures clean cages are filled with species-appropriate bedding
  • Performs general cleaning duties in the wash area, including sweeping and washing floors, washing sinks, counters and daily cleaning of the washers
  • Loads and unloads equipment from cage washers
  • Maintains storage rooms and feed coolers: keeps area in a tidy orderly manner, to assist in easy access and removal of supplies
  • Responsible for collection and processing of facility laundry
  • Performs general cleaning duties in the facility and wash area as requested


  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Familiarity with WHMIS and handling of chemical agents
  • Ability to monitor equipment and lift and move 25 kg feed bags
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Good organizational and time management skills
