Please note this position is located at the Dental Outreach Satellite Clinics in LaCrete and High Level, AB, and will involve travel between these 2 sites.  The clinic provides oral health services to the communities for approximately 30 weeks/year.  The active periods for this appointment are as follows: 

  • January to mid-February 
  • March 
  • Late April to Mid - July
  • Early September to Early November

The Registered Dental Assistant assists with the coordination of the satellite clinic operations and works closely with the Dental Outreach Coordinator and the Patient Services Clerk in the administration of the satellite clinic.

This position provides and models chair-side intra-oral dental assisting to undergraduate dental, dental hygiene students and instructors within the scope of practice for a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA). The RDA mentors dental and dental hygiene students on intra-oral skills during the delivery of dental treatment and is required to anticipate student needs for assistance.

Duties

  • Prepares dental clinic operations - cleans, disinfects, organizes and maintains all dental units
  • Prepares dental materials, supplies and sterilized instruments for clinical use
  • Responsible for routine equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems with dental technician
  • Ensures that IPC protocols and procedures are followed in the clinic operations
  • Mentors students and instructors to minimize infection control violations and responds to control violations
  • Provides and demonstrates 4-handed chair-side intra-oral assistance to undergraduate DDS students, DH students and instructors
  • Assists students and instructors with the patient treatment process
  • Assists with treatment preparation and anticipates students' need for assistance
  • Provides information on materials and equipment and provides guidance on proper usage
  • Monitors and maintains inventory of all dental materials/instrumentation/equipment to ensure adequate supplies for clinical operations
  • Monitors and supports students and the dentist/supervisor in the clinic operations
  • Properly stores and organizes all dental materials, instrumentation and equipment according to policies and procedures
  • Prepares and documents all instruments; delivers to CSR and stores them appropriately
  • Maintains dental equipment and initiates replacements as required
  • Periodically may require transporting students & staff to residences from bus stop

Qualifications

  • Certificate from an accredited Dental Assisting Program or NDAEB Certification
  • Two years of previous RDA experience
  • Current registration with CADA, CDAA along with a local association license
  • Current CPR: Health Care Provider Level C certification
  • Knowledge of WHMIS
  • Knowledge of dental materials management, dental instrumentation and dental equipment
  • Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and perform tasks accurately with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; meet deadlines and work well under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License
