The Faculty of Arts’ Occupational Health and Safety program (OH&S) is delivered internally through principal investigators, administrators, managers and supervisors. They collaborate with the University of Alberta Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Federal, Provincial and Municipal agencies, other universities and colleges, as well as industry to help develop and implement strategies and processes to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Code, and evaluate the effectiveness of this program.

The Health and Safety Coordinator provides stewardship of the development and maintenance of the Faculty’s OH&S program in order to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for over 6000 people across 16 departments in the Faculty of Arts. The diversity of our programs, ranging from laboratories to our industrial design studios and theatre set designs, requires a robust and comprehensive OH&S program that is essential to the prevention of workplace incidents, injuries, and illnesses. This temporary position will functionally report to the Director, Strategy, Initiatives, Facilities and Finance with regular supervision under the guidance of the Chair of the Faculty of Arts Health and Safety Committee, with a specific focus of review, development and implementation of the OH&S system.


  • Acts as a resource to the Senior Administration, Supervisors, staff, and Health and Safety Committee for all health and safety matters
  • Participates in the Faculty of Arts OH&S Committee as an ex officio member, and helps to establish and guide project working groups as assigned
  • Conducts specialized safety lectures; participates in site investigations
  • Develops and implements preventive maintenance and inspection programs, and conducts initial safety audits of systems, infrastructure, equipment and operations
  • Promotes the use of EHS Online Incident Reporting System within the Faculty; this includes identification of “super-users” who can provide future ongoing training of the reporting system     
  • Supports the Committee Chair by liaising between faculty units, EH&S, and other agencies with regard to Environmental Health and Safety policy and procedure matters
  • Develops and implements systems to track statistical measures and metrics; identifies, develops and advises on appropriate preventative measures
  • Develops and implements recommendations to ensure effective health and safety record keeping
  • Reviews current training compliance procedures
  • Works with departments to develop a health and safety orientation and training materials for new employees
  • Works with supervisors to ensure effective assessment and documentation of competency levels of internal and external workers engaged in specific activities to assess safety training needs


  • Minimum U of A Faculty of Extension Occupational Health and Safety Certificate, or other comparable Health and Safety program certification issued by a recognized institution (other desirable certification includes: Occupational Health and Safety Technology Diploma, Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent)
  • Working knowledge of business software such as Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications
  • Minimum 3 years of project management experience in the assessment, development and implementation of OHS systems, policies and procedures, preferably in a municipal, large institutional or industrial setting
  • Extensive knowledge of provincial and federal health and safety legislation and University policies and procedures
  • Experience in accident/incident investigation and follow up and in giving presentations
  • Experience in project managing the implementation of key health and safety systems within a large post-secondary academic environment setting would be an asset
